Mattresses

The problem with buying a mattress is that they all look similar but of course they can be quite different on the inside, and these differences can have a huge impact on the comfort afforded to the end user.

The fact is that budget mattresses are made in essentially the same way as an expensive mattress, but the quantity and quality of the springs and fillings is what makes one feel much better, and last a lot longer than the other.

QUILTED OR TUFTED?

On the outside mattresses are finished by either quilting or tufting.

Quilting can be done in a number of decorative ways but is essentially a way of attaching the outer fabric to the fillings that cover the springs; these mattresses tend to have a smoother flatter surface than a tufted mattress.

Tufting – this is a traditional way of holding the fabric fillings on both sides of the spring unit, tapes are passed right through the mattress at regular intervals and secured on each side by tags or woolen washers, this prevents loose fillings from being dislodged.
